Guest of Honour is grippingly obtuse, at first, like early David Lynch. But eventually, sadly, Egoyan nullifies all narrative possibilities with a silly and cumbersome plotline about an accidental. With Guest of Honour, Egoyan seems to have found a comfort zone between these two starkly different forms of filmmaking.

It introduces the viewer to a simple plot about a relationship between Veronica and Jim, a father and daughter who seem to be going through a troubling time. Vaguely arty, hit-and-miss potboilers best describe the recent movies of Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan ('Chloe', 'The Captive'). His latest, 'Guest of Honour', Guest Of Honour begins immediately following the death of its protagonist, Jim Davis (David Thewlis)—not the Garfield cartoonist, but a particularly persnickety health inspector who's perhaps a little too devoted to his profession.

A shame, considering the entrancing rhythm that smartly shifted the seesaw up for most of the film. Guest of Honour may not be Egoyan at his best, but it is most certainly some of the best of Egoyan.
